Chipping sparrow
1827-1838
John James Audubon captured the tiny Chipping Sparrow perched dramatically on a twisting Black Locust branch in this stunning 19th-century print. Part of his legendary 'Birds of America' project, Audubon famously shot and wired his bird models into lifelike poses to achieve this incredible realism. The hand-colored engraving, printed by his collaborator Robert Havell, showcases the sparrow's crisp chestnut cap and striped wings against delicate white blossoms. It's a perfect snapshot of American wildlife that helped launch the modern conservation movement.
