Vasilisa Prekrasnai︠a︡ Pl.07

1902

Ivan Bilibin brings the eerie Russian folktale of Vasilisa the Beautiful to life with his signature bold outlines and folk-art flair. Here, the brave heroine stands in the terrifying garden of the witch Baba Yaga, clutching a magical glowing skull that lights her way through the darkness. Behind her, a fence made of human bones and skulls surrounds the witch's famous hut, which stands on giant chicken legs just out of sight. Bilibin's 1902 illustration perfectly captures the spooky yet beautiful atmosphere of Slavic mythology, blending Art Nouveau elegance with traditional Russian embroidery patterns on Vasilisa's dress.
