Susanna And The Elders

Jacob Jordaens brings a rather uncomfortable biblical scene to life with his signature earthy realism. Here, the virtuous Susanna is just trying to enjoy a peaceful bath in her garden, washing her feet in a golden basin, when two lecherous elders pop up over the wall to spy on her. Notice the little dog in the corner barking away—he's the only one trying to sound the alarm! As a Flemish Baroque master who often worked alongside Rubens, Jordaens was famous for painting robust, fleshy figures, and he definitely didn't hold back on the elders' grotesque, grinning faces here.
