A Waterfall

A Waterfall by Jacob van Ruisdael

Jacob van Ruisdael was the undisputed master of the Dutch Golden Age landscape, and here he delivers pure, untamed nature. Instead of a calm, pastoral scene, he gives us a dramatic, rushing waterfall crashing over dark, craggy rocks, framed by twisting trees and a looming mountain in the distance. Ruisdael actually traveled to the border regions of Germany and the Netherlands to sketch these wilder terrains, bringing a sense of rugged adventure back to his studio. The churning white water and brooding, cloud-filled sky show off his incredible ability to capture the raw, moody power of the natural world.
