View of Bentheim Castle
Jacob van Ruisdael, the master of Dutch landscapes, captured the majestic Burg Bentheim in this delicate drawing. Notice how he uses subtle washes of grey to create depth, leading your eye from the travelers in the foreground all the way to the imposing castle on the hill. Ruisdael was absolutely fascinated by this specific castle, sketching it from various angles during his travels, almost like a 17th-century tourist with a sketchbook! This piece showcases his incredible ability to convey vast, atmospheric spaces with just a few strokes, proving you don't need bold colors to make a landscape feel alive.
