Landscape with Cascade
1670-1675
Jacob van Ruisdael was the undisputed master of moody skies, and this late-career masterpiece is a perfect example. Notice how the rushing water crashes energetically over the rocky foreground, creating a wild contrast with the calm lake and dramatic, brooding clouds above. Though Ruisdael was Dutch, he frequently painted imaginary, mountainous landscapes like this one because he prioritized the emotional drama of nature over strict geography. It captures the essence of Baroque landscape painting, making the natural world feel both breathtakingly beautiful and slightly untamed.
