Mountain Torrent
1670s
Jacob van Ruisdael brings the wild, untamed nature of the mountains right into the Dutch Golden Age with this dramatic scene. A rushing waterfall crashes over rocks in the foreground, while a shepherd carefully guides his flock across a terrifyingly rickety wooden bridge. Looming over it all is a massive, brooding mountain under a sky filled with billowing clouds. Ruisdael was famous for his moody landscapes, and this piece perfectly captures the sublime power of nature that was so popular during the Baroque period.
