The Deluge by John Martin, 1834

John Martin plunges us straight into the biblical apocalypse with this terrifying vision of the Great Flood. Swirling, pitch-black waters and jagged cliffs dwarf the tiny, desperate figures huddled on a rocky ledge in the foreground. In the distance, a hellish red glow and a jagged bolt of lightning signal the end of the world. Martin was the master of the 'sublime,' making humans look completely powerless against nature's wrath, and his dramatic, blockbuster-style scenes were the 19th-century equivalent of a Hollywood disaster movie.
