Lazarus en de rijke man
c. 1550
Jacopo Bassano brings a biblical parable to life with gritty, everyday realism that feels more like a snapshot of 16th-century Italy than a holy scene. In the foreground, the starving beggar Lazarus lies neglected on the ground, his only companions a dog scavenging for scraps near his feet. Meanwhile, just a few feet away, the wealthy man feasts in luxury at a table, completely ignoring the suffering right at his doorstep—a stark visual warning about greed. Bassano was famous for mixing sacred stories with ordinary life, and here, the sad expression of the young boy standing between the two worlds seems to judge the rich man's cruelty just as much as the viewer does.
