De aanbidding der herders
Jacopo Bassano brings a gritty, down-to-earth vibe to this classic biblical scene, filling it with muscular shepherds and a menagerie of farm animals that look like they just walked in from the fields. Mary, draped in rich blue, gently presents the baby Jesus to a kneeling shepherd, while an ox and donkey crowd the foreground, adding a touch of rustic chaos. Bassano was famous for painting everyday peasant life, and he couldn't help but infuse this holy moment with the smells and textures of a real barn. The dramatic lighting and crowded composition pull you right into the intimate, bustling moment of the first Christmas.
