Madonna and Child
1450s
Jacopo Bellini, the patriarch of Venice’s most famous artistic dynasty, captures a surprisingly tender moment here between Mary and the young Jesus. Notice how Mary’s head tilts affectionately toward the child, her cheek almost touching his—a warm, human gesture that signals the shift from stiff medieval icons to Renaissance realism. The rich, heavy folds of her red robe and the glowing gold halos inscribed with ancient text create a striking contrast against the dark background. It’s a beautiful example of a father laying the groundwork for his sons, Giovanni and Gentile, who would go on to define Venetian painting.
