Spanish Patriots Attacking the French Banditti – Loyal Britons Lending a Lift
1808
James Gillray, the undisputed king of British political cartoons, captured the chaos of the Peninsular War in this frantic 1808 sketch. It depicts Spanish patriots clashing with French troops, while British soldiers jump into the fray to lend a hand—a perfect visual summary of the era's shaky alliances. The loose, scribbly lines make the battle look like a storm of ink and charcoal, buzzing with the same manic energy found in his famous satirical prints. It's a raw, unpolished glimpse into how a master caricaturist saw the world: messy, violent, and slightly absurd.
