„Os carregadores de carvão“
1783
In this savage 1783 political cartoon by James Gillray, a fox-headed man (a visual pun on politician Charles James Fox) and a portly, sash-wearing figure (the Prince of Wales) are caught red-handed shoveling gold coins. They are diverting funds from a banner labeled 'For the Use of the Public' into a large green bag marked 'For Private Use.' Gillray mocks the corrupt alliance between the Prince and Fox by calling them 'The Cole-Heavers'—a pun on 'coal-heavers,' the rough laborers who moved coal—suggesting these elites are merely greedy workers heaving the nation's wealth into their own pockets while sarcastically calling them 'virtuous Elves.'
