The Violin Maker’s Village
1907
Best known for his iconic 'I Want You' Uncle Sam poster, James Montgomery Flagg shows a softer side in this 1907 watercolor. Painted in Marktneukirchen, a German town famous for instrument making, it captures a craftsman deeply focused on his violin in a cozy workshop. The loose, fluid brushstrokes create a warm, intimate atmosphere, making it feel like we're quietly peeking through the doorway. It's a charming glimpse into traditional craftsmanship, far removed from the bold propaganda art Flagg would later create.
