Nymphs bathing
1585-1625
Jan Brueghel the Elder creates a bizarrely charming contrast here, mixing a serene spa day for nymphs with a rather gruesome hunting haul. In the foreground, we see a chaotic pile of dead deer, fish, and birds alongside eager hunting dogs, while just a few feet away, a group of women casually bathe in a tranquil forest stream. Brueghel, the son of the famous Pieter Bruegel the Elder, was nicknamed 'Velvet Brueghel' for his incredibly smooth, detailed brushwork, which you can see in the lush foliage and the texture of the animal fur. It's a classic mythological scene, likely depicting Diana and her nymphs, but the sheer amount of dead game makes it feel like a hunter's bragging rights display rather than just a peaceful dip in the woods.
