Sumptuous Fruit Still Life with Jewellery Box
c. 1650 - 1655
Jan Davidsz de Heem was the ultimate show-off of the Dutch Golden Age, and this Baroque masterpiece proves it. Piled high with translucent grapes, juicy pomegranates, and a half-eaten melon, the scene screams luxury, especially with that fancy blue jewellery box and silver goblet thrown in for good measure. De Heem was famous for his 'pronkstilleven' (ostentatious still lifes), which weren't just about pretty fruit—they were subtle reminders that wealth and beauty are fleeting, much like a ripe peach left out in the sun. Notice the wooden recorder leaning against the box? It’s a classic 'vanitas' symbol, hinting that life is as short as a song.
