Judith and Holofernes by Jan de Bray, 1659

In this dramatic Baroque scene, Judith prepares to deliver the fatal blow to the sleeping Assyrian general Holofernes, her sword raised high in the dim candlelight. Her maidservant watches anxiously from the shadows, holding a sack ready for the gruesome trophy. Jan de Bray masterfully uses deep shadows and stark lighting to heighten the tension of this biblical tale of bravery and betrayal. The rich red of Judith's dress contrasts sharply with the pale, vulnerable skin of the general, making it a chillingly intimate moment frozen in time just before the axe falls.
