O tocador de alaúde

O tocador de alaúde by Jan Steen, c. 1670

Jan Steen, who actually ran a tavern and brewery for much of his life, brings his signature chaotic energy to this garden scene. While a woman in the foreground strums her lute with serious focus, the party behind her is already spiraling: a man in a red cloak laughs uproariously with a glass of wine, while another couple gets a little too cozy in the background. The Dutch phrase 'a Jan Steen household' still means a messy, chaotic home today, and this painting is a perfect example of his lively style that often hid moral warnings about the dangers of too much drink and loose living beneath the fun.
