The Village Alchemist
early 1660s
Jan Steen, a master of chaotic domestic scenes (and an actual innkeeper!), captures the absurdity of a village alchemist here. The bearded man in the red cap is so obsessed with stirring his bubbling potion that he's completely ignoring his family's misery—notice the woman on the left clutching her baby and shielding her face from the fumes! Meanwhile, his 'assistants' in the back are gleefully reading a recipe, probably for turning lead into gold, while the room fills with hanging herbs and strange glassware. It's a classic Dutch Golden Age warning about the folly of chasing quick riches instead of doing honest work.
