Adam and Singing Angels
Jan van Eyck brings a touch of awkward realism to this panel from the famous Ghent Altarpiece. On the left, Adam stands somewhat sheepishly, clutching a fig leaf to cover his nudity, while above him, a tiny scene depicts the biblical story of Cain and Abel. To the right, a choir of angels in lavish red robes sings from a large music book, their faces so expressive you can almost hear the harmony. This masterpiece of the Northern Renaissance is celebrated for its incredible detail and the lifelike quality of the figures, which was revolutionary for the 1430s.
