Jean-Antoine Watteau, the master of the playful Rococo style, usually filled his canvases with elegant party-goers, but here he takes a quiet moment to study nature. You can see his process unfold right on the page: the left side is richly detailed with brown wash and bright white chalk highlights, while the right side fades into ghostly, faint outlines of leaves and flowers. It’s a rare, intimate glimpse into how a genius observed the world before turning it into a masterpiece. Even the artist's name is scribbled at the bottom, a humble signature on a simple botanical study.
