Seated Woman Looking Down
c. 1720-1721
Created around 1720 near the end of his short life, Rococo master Jean-Antoine Watteau sketches a young woman with incredible sensitivity. Dressed in a bonnet and a dress with a prominent bow, she looks down demurely, perhaps reading or simply daydreaming. Unlike his famous theatrical party scenes, this drawing feels like a candid, private moment captured with loose strokes of red and black chalk. It shows how Watteau could convey volume and emotion with just a few scribbles, making the subject feel alive centuries later.
