El arroyo del caballo blanco

Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot

El arroyo del caballo blanco by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot

Under the sprawling canopy of a massive, gnarled tree, figures rest in the shade while a rider with a bright red cap guides a white horse through a shallow stream. Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, often called the 'grandfather of Impressionism,' used loose, feathery brushstrokes here to capture the fleeting light and atmosphere of the French countryside. He was so popular during his lifetime that a famous joke emerged about the sheer volume of forgeries: 'Corot painted 3,000 canvases, but 10,000 of them are in America!'
