Tête de garçon
1745 - 1850
Jean-Baptiste Greuze was the 18th-century master of capturing raw emotion, and this young boy is a perfect example of his charm. With flushed cheeks and an open mouth, he looks like he’s just gasped at a magic trick or is about to belt out a song. Greuze often created these 'expression heads' as studies to practice capturing innocent wonder before tackling his larger, moralizing paintings. The soft watercolor washes give his curly hair and skin a lifelike glow that feels surprisingly candid for the era.
