Flying Cupid with a Torch
c. 1790
Meet the ultimate heavenly messenger, a chubby little Cupid soaring through a dreamy, cloud-filled sky in this charming oval composition. With rosy cheeks and tiny, feathered wings, he clutches a flaming torch in one hand and a leafy wreath in the other, looking ready to deliver a very important message from the gods. Painted by Jean-Baptiste Greuze around 1790, this playful figure captures the sweet, sentimental style the French artist was famous for, proving that even mythological gods can look adorably baby-like.
