Portrait Of A Boy In A Black Waistcoat, Turned To The Right
Jean-Baptiste Greuze was a master of capturing raw emotion, and this portrait of a young boy is a perfect example of his sensitive touch. Notice the soft, rosy cheeks and the slightly melancholic gaze of the boy, whose tousled reddish-brown hair frames a face that seems lost in thought. Dressed in a crisp white ruffled shirt and a dark waistcoat, he looks like a character straight out of an 18th-century French novel. Greuze was famous for making his subjects look incredibly lifelike and vulnerable, almost as if they were about to speak or cry.
