디오게네스 by Jean-Léon Gérôme, 1860

Here sits Diogenes, the ancient Greek philosopher who decided a giant clay jar was better than a house. He's surrounded by stray dogs—a nod to his 'Cynic' philosophy, which literally translates to 'dog-like' living. Holding a lantern in broad daylight, he's acting out his famous stunt of searching the world for a single honest man. Jean-Léon Gérôme painted this in 1860 with hyper-realistic detail, making the philosopher's rugged, dirty feet and the texture of the jar look almost photographic.
