Mulheres a banhar-se
Step into a sun-drenched stone bathhouse where three pale women are enjoying a soak, completely unaware (or perhaps quite aware) of the viewer's gaze. In the foreground, one woman lounges on a carved wooden bench, while a dark-robed figure stands watchfully in the doorway, adding a mysterious contrast to the scene. Jean-Léon Gérôme was a superstar of Academic art and Orientalism, famous for painting 'exotic' Middle Eastern scenes that were often more fantasy than reality. His incredible attention to detail, from the patterned rugs to the hookah pipes, made these imaginary harems feel startlingly real to 19th-century audiences.
