Mars and Venus Surprised By Vulcan
160
Imagine walking in on a cheating spouse, but instead of just being mad, you invite the whole neighborhood to watch. That’s the divine drama unfolding here as Vulcan yanks back the heavy green curtain to expose his wife Venus and her lover Mars in a very compromising position. It’s a total mythological scandal! Wtewael, a master of the Mannerist style, crams the scene with twisted, muscular bodies and electric colors to maximize the chaos. Even the gods floating in the clouds are leaning in to gossip about the affair. It’s basically a 17th-century reality TV show frozen in paint.
