Mis hijos by Joaquín Sorolla, 1904

Sorolla, a master of Luminism usually famous for blindingly bright beach scenes, trades the sun for shadows in this intimate family portrait. The boy stands rigidly in a grey suit with a comically large white bow tie, looking like he's enduring a boring photo shoot, while his sisters in striking red dresses lounge casually behind him. It’s a brilliant study in contrast—dark backgrounds versus bright fabric, and stiff formality versus relaxed childhood personalities. This snapshot of his own kids hangs in the Museo Sorolla in Madrid, the artist's former home and studio.
