The Port of Dordrecht by Moonlight by Johan Barthold Jongkind, 1868

Before Monet made splashing light famous, his mentor Jongkind was already mastering it here in this moonlit harbor scene. The Dutch port of Dordrecht glows under a dramatic, cloud-filled sky where the moon bursts through like a spotlight. Notice the loose, scratchy brushstrokes on the water—they make the reflection shimmer and dance, almost like the water is moving right in front of you. Jongkind was a crucial bridge to Impressionism; Monet once said he owed the 'education of his eye' to this very man! The dark silhouette of the church and the busy quay contrast beautifully with the ethereal light, capturing a fleeting, breezy night perfectly.
