Il Pont Neuf
1849-50
Before Monet made splashing light famous, his mentor Jongkind was already capturing the moody, dramatic skies of Paris in this precursor to Impressionism. The Pont Neuf bridge stretches across the Seine under a brooding, storm-heavy canopy that feels like it's about to burst. You can spot the twin towers of Notre Dame peeking out in the distance, while down by the muddy riverbank, laundresses and boatmen go about their daily grind. This loose, energetic style was a huge leap away from stiff academic art and basically paved the runway for the entire Impressionist revolution.
