Mulino a vento ad Anversa
1866
Johan Barthold Jongkind scribbled the date '16 Sept 66' right into this breezy Antwerp landscape, capturing a moment just before the Impressionist movement fully exploded. The sky is the real showstopper here—swirling with dramatic blues and whites that look like they're about to blow the windmill right over. Jongkind was actually a major mentor to Claude Monet, teaching him to paint outdoors and capture light just like this loose, sketchy style. You can almost feel the wind whipping through that large green tree and rustling the clothes of the tiny figure standing guard on the far right.
