Cranio, visto da davanti
1839
Johan Thomas Lundbye, typically celebrated for his idyllic Danish landscapes and animals, takes a somber turn in this 1839 anatomical study. The skull rests heavily on a book, rendered with delicate cross-hatching that captures the smooth curve of the cranium and the dark voids of the eye sockets. The handwritten inscription at the bottom reveals a haunting specific detail: this is the skull of a young girl from the island of Bornholm, recorded on March 12th. It’s a classic Romantic *memento mori*, blending scientific precision with a melancholy reminder of mortality.
