Cloud Study
1822
John Constable was basically the meteorologist of the Romantic art world. He painted over a hundred of these cloud studies around 1822 to understand how the atmosphere worked, famously calling the sky the 'chief organ of sentiment.' Instead of using the sky as a static background, he treated it as the main event, capturing the fleeting light and wind of a specific moment outdoors. You can almost feel the breeze looking at those fluffy, tumbling clouds drifting across the blue expanse, a testament to his obsession with nature's changing moods.
