Flatford Mill
1810-1811
John Constable painted this cozy riverside scene right in his backyard—well, almost. Flatford Mill was actually owned by his father, so the artist knew every brick and ripple of the River Stour intimately. Framed by a massive, leafy tree on the right, the composition uses loose, energetic brushstrokes to capture the light on the water and rustic red brick. It feels like a fresh, almost snapshot-like love letter to the English countryside, breaking away from the stiff, formal landscapes popular at the time.
