John James Audubon

1827-1838

Airone nano by John James Audubon, 1827-1838

John James Audubon had a massive ego and an even bigger book to match. This plate from his legendary 'The Birds of America' features the ironically named 'Least Bittern,' one of North America's smallest herons, blown up to life-size on a page nearly three feet tall. Notice the dramatic, almost theatrical poses—Audubon often killed and wired his subjects into dynamic positions to make them look more exciting than they actually were in the wild. The text at the bottom identifies the trio as a male, female, and young bird, showcasing his scientific rigor alongside his artistic flair.
