Obstgarten-Oriole
1827-1838
Forget boring museum specimens—John James Audubon wanted to show birds actually *living*. Here, the dapper male Orchard Oriole, dressed in striking black and chestnut, belts out a song from a thorny Honey Locust branch while the yellow females busy themselves with a nest. Audubon even threw in a bird hanging dramatically upside down to show off their acrobatic skills, capturing the chaotic energy of nature for his famous 'Birds of America' series.
