Stillleben mit Narzissen

Stillleben mit Narzissen by John Singer Sargent, ca. 1885-95

John Singer Sargent, best known for his glamorous society portraits, took a break from painting high-society elites to capture a much simpler, sun-drenched breakfast table. Bursting with loose, energetic brushstrokes, a silver bowl overflows with bright yellow daffodils that practically vibrate against the moody, dark background. To the left, a couple of glasses filled with amber liquid sit beside fresh oranges, suggesting a leisurely morning meal. The empty wine glass in the foreground invites the viewer right into the scene, making you feel like you're about to pull up a chair and enjoy the view.
