Due donne arabe

Due donne arabe by John Singer Sargent, circa 1905

John Singer Sargent captures a quiet, candid moment with these two women resting against a sun-baked wall, their white robes glowing in the light. The loose, energetic brushstrokes give the scene an almost snapshot-like quality, as if he quickly sketched them before they moved. While the woman on the left seems lost in thought, her companion stares directly at the viewer from the shadow of a dark doorway topped with a glowing lantern. It's a fantastic example of Sargent's fascination with Orientalist subjects during his travels, showing off his incredible ability to render light and fabric with just a few confident swipes of the brush.
