Joseph Henry Sharp captured the dignified gaze of the legendary Lakota leader Red Cloud around 1900, using rich blues and earthy tones to bring out his commanding presence. As a founding member of the Taos Society of Artists, Sharp dedicated his life to documenting Native American cultures, making this portrait a precious historical record of the man who successfully fought the U.S. government in Red Cloud's War. The striking blue blanket draped over his shoulders contrasts beautifully with his weathered face, revealing a leader who never bowed to pressure.
