Socrates
1780
Angelica Kauffmann, a founding member of the Royal Academy, captures the great philosopher Socrates in a rare moment of quiet productivity. Seated barefoot on stone steps, the bearded thinker is deeply focused, scribbling away on a scroll while holding another in his left hand. This 1780 Neoclassical engraving strips away the usual drama of his famous execution to show him as a working intellectual. It’s a fun historical twist, considering Socrates famously never wrote anything down himself—leaving that job to his student Plato!
