Queen Mab’s Cave

Queen Mab’s Cave by Joseph Mallord William Turner, after 1846

Turner dives headfirst into the realm of dreams with this misty, ethereal vision of Queen Mab’s grotto, a subject drawn from Celtic folklore and Shakespeare. The scene is dominated by a massive, shadowy archway looming over a dark body of water where tiny, ghostly figures frolic and dive. Perched high above on a hazy hill sits a crumbling castle, dissolving into the cloudy sky. Created after 1846, this late work shows the Romantic master abandoning strict realism for pure emotion and atmosphere, blurring the lines between landscape and legend.
