Le Broc
1920
Juan Gris invites us to look at a kitchen table through a kaleidoscope of geometry. Painted in 1920, this Cubist scene features a pitcher, a glass, and a pear, all flattened into overlapping planes of grey, brown, and ochre. This is Synthetic Cubism, where the chaos of fragmentation is replaced by a calm, almost architectural order. Notice the playful faux wood grain on the chair and the scribbled notes on the paper—Gris is teasing us with hints of the real world inside his abstract puzzle.
