Menino tocando flauta
1630s
Judith Leyster, a rare female master of the Dutch Golden Age, captures a young musician completely lost in his performance. Dressed in a cozy brown coat with a fluffy white collar and a bright red cap, the boy plays a wooden flute while a violin and recorder hang on the wall behind him, as if waiting for their turn. Leyster was actually one of the first women admitted to the Haarlem painters' guild, and her lively, informal scenes were so good that for centuries, people mistakenly attributed her work to her husband or Frans Hals!
