The Serenade by Judith Leyster, 1629

Judith Leyster, a rare female master of the Dutch Golden Age, captures a lively musician here with incredible energy. The young man, sporting a huge feathered hat and a striped doublet, looks upward with his mouth open, seemingly singing along as he strums his lute. For centuries, her loose, confident brushstrokes were so similar to Frans Hals that her work was often misattributed to him until a major rediscovery in the late 19th century. It's a vibrant snapshot of 17th-century musical joy.
