側面的年輕男孩 by Judith Leyster, c. 1630

Judith Leyster captures the quiet charm of childhood in this circular portrait of a young boy, painted around 1630 during the Dutch Golden Age. Notice the rosy flush on his cheek and the delicate, almost translucent ruffled collar that contrasts sharply with his dark clothing. Leyster was one of the few successful female painters of her time, often overshadowed by her husband, Frans Hals, but her bold brushwork and ability to capture fleeting expressions were truly her own. The tondo format gives the piece an intimate, medallion-like feel, as if we are catching a secret glimpse of this young subject lost in thought.
