Maternidad
1929
Julio González is famous for welding iron into art, but here he uses paint and ink to think like a sculptor. In this 1929 piece, he treats the mother and child not as soft flesh, but as solid, geometric volumes. The mother stands like a sturdy blue pillar, her dress a grid of patterns, while the baby is a smooth, white orb nestled in her arms. The strange, T-shaped background suggests he was designing a structure, hinting at the Cubist influence he shared with his good friend Picasso.
