La Sagrada Familia
1639
Jusepe de Ribera brings the Holy Family down to earth in this 1639 Baroque masterpiece, trading heavenly halos for a cozy, domestic scene. Notice how Mary isn't floating on clouds; she's sitting on the floor, looking like a loving mother, with a basket of laundry right next to her! The dramatic lighting—classic chiaroscuro—spotlights the sleeping baby Jesus and the young John the Baptist, while Joseph stands in the shadows holding a scroll. Ribera, a Spanish painter working in Naples, was famous for making religious figures look like real, gritty people rather than perfect ideals, and this tender family portrait is a perfect example of his 'street-level' spirituality.
