San Pietro penitente
1628-32
Jusepe de Ribera, known in Italy as 'Lo Spagnoletto' or 'the little Spaniard,' captures the raw agony of Saint Peter in this dramatic Baroque masterpiece. The saint is bathed in a harsh spotlight against a pitch-black void, his weathered face turned heavenward in a desperate plea for forgiveness. You can almost feel the tension in his raised hand and the frantic clutch of his other hand against his chest. Ribera uses this extreme contrast of light and dark, a style called tenebrism, to make the spiritual struggle feel incredibly physical and immediate, almost like a theatrical stage play frozen in time.
